  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf Cuban bread (approx. 1820 inches long)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Step 1: In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter, minced garlic, finely chopped cilantro, fresh lime juice, kosher salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture is fragrant. This is your bold and buttery garlic spread.
  2. Step 2: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Carefully slice the Cuban bread lengthwise through the middle, creating two long halves. Generously spread the prepared garlic-lime butter mixture over the cut sides of both bread halves, ensuring an even and thick coating.
  3. Step 3: Place the buttered bread halves onto a baking sheet, cut-side up. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges of the bread are golden brown and crisp, and the garlic butter is bubbling and aromatic. The bread should be toasted but still pliable enough to form a sandwich.
  4. Step 4: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Arrange the 8 slices of Swiss cheese evenly over one half of the toasted Cuban bread. If desired, you can add other fillings like deli turkey ham at this stage. Return the baking sheet to the oven for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly.
  5. Step 5: Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. Place the other toasted, un-cheesed half of the Cuban bread on top of the cheese-layered half, pressing down gently to form a cohesive sandwich. Slice the long sandwich into individual portions (typically 3-4 pieces) and serve immediately while hot and the garlic butter is still glistening.

Notes

  • While best enjoyed fresh, store any leftover sandwich portions tightly wrapped in foil in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours; the bread will soften but the bold flavors will still shine through.
  • Bring leftover slices back to life by reheating them gently in a toaster oven or conventional oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 10 minutes until warm and the cheese is gooey again; skip the microwave for a better texture.
  • Elevate your sandwich experience by serving these hot, buttery slices alongside a crisp mixed greens salad with a light vinaigrette or a steaming cup of traditional Cuban black bean soup for a truly authentic meal.
  • The fresh lime juice isn't just for zest; it's a critical bright counterpoint that lifts the rich butter and garlic, so ensure you use fresh-squeezed for that authentic, vibrant Cuban kick!
