Ingredients
- Whole wheat bread: 4 slices
- Granulated sugar (or erythritol/monk fruit blend): 2 tablespoons
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tablespoon
- Unsalted butter, melted: 1 tablespoon
- vanilla powder: 1/2 teaspoon
- Cooking spray (avocado or coconut oil): as needed
Instructions
- Step 1: First, cut each slice of whole wheat bread into approximately 1-inch cubes. You should have about 16-20 cubes in total.
- Step 2: In a shallow bowl or plate, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon, mixing well until thoroughly blended. In a separate small bowl, melt the unsalted butter and stir in the alcohol-free vanilla extract.
- Step 3: Dip each bread cube into the melted butter mixture, ensuring all sides are lightly coated. Then, immediately transfer the buttered cubes to the cinnamon-sugar mixture, tossing gently until each cube is evenly coated.
- Step 4: Lightly spray your air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the churro bites in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. You may need to cook them in batches.
- Step 5: Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the bites are golden brown and crispy.
- Step 6: Carefully remove the churro bites from the air fryer and serve warm. For an extra touch, you can dust them with a tiny bit more cinnamon sugar or serve with a light dip.
Notes
- For best enjoyment, store any leftover churro bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one day; they’re truly at their peak when fresh from the air fryer.
- To bring back their wonderful crunch, simply reheat your churro bites in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for just 2-3 minutes until they're warm and crispy once more.
- These delicious bites are fabulous served warm alongside a light fruit compote, or for an extra treat, try them with a small bowl of unsweetened Greek yogurt drizzled with a touch of honey.
- Chef's Tip: For a beautiful, even coating and maximum crispness, make sure your bread cubes are thoroughly, but not excessively, coated in the melted butter mixture before tossing them into the cinnamon-sugar blend.
