Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (from a 13.2 oz / 375g package), thawed
- 1/2 cup berry jam (raspberry, strawberry, or mixed berry)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (or water)
- 1/2 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon water to create an egg wash.
- Step 2: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Spread the berry jam evenly over one half of the pastry sheet, leaving a small border. Fold the other half of the pastry over the jam-covered half, pressing down gently to seal the edges.
- Step 3: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the folded pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Carefully pick up each strip, twist it several times, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all strips, spacing them slightly apart.
- Step 4: Brush the tops of the pastry twists with the egg wash and sprinkle generously with granulated sugar. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and flaky. Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Step 5: While the twists are cooling, prepare the glaze. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla powder until smooth. Add the remaining tablespoon of milk if needed to reach a drizzly consistency. Drizzle the sweet glaze over the warm twists before serving.
Notes
- Keep your cooled twists in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for longer enjoyment; just be aware the glaze might get a little sticky.
- To bring back that glorious flaky texture, gently reheat your twists for a few minutes in a toaster oven or a regular oven at 300°F (150°C) until warmed through and crisp.
- These delightful twists are perfect on their own, but truly shine when served warm with a cup of coffee or tea, or as a dessert alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scattering of fresh berries.
- For the cleanest cuts and easiest twisting, pop your jam-filled, folded pastry sheet into the fridge for about 10-15 minutes before slicing; this helps firm it up and prevents the jam from oozing.
