Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 6 slices Provolone cheese
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon. Once browned, drain any excess grease, then add the chopped yellow onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables begin to soften.
- Step 2: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Pour in the beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring well to combine all ingredients.
- Step 3: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables. Season generously with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Step 4: Once the sloppy joe mixture has thickened, divide it evenly among 4-6 hamburger buns. Top each portion with one or more slices of Provolone cheese.
- Step 5: Place the open-faced sloppy joes under a broiler for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Alternatively, you can cover the skillet for a minute or two to melt the cheese if serving directly from the pan. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Store any leftover sloppy joe mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days; it's best to keep the buns separate to prevent sogginess.
- To reheat, gently warm the sloppy joe mixture on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, or in the microwave until heated through; then assemble with fresh buns and cheese before a quick broil.
- Elevate your sloppy joes by serving them alongside some crispy seasoned potato wedges or a fresh, crunchy coleslaw to balance the rich flavors.
- For that authentic 'Philly' experience and best melty coverage, use thin-sliced Provolone cheese and don't skip the broiler step to get it wonderfully bubbly and slightly golden.
